The magic of colour

Transforming The Experience Hall of ADOT in New Dehli, India

A Dot is the largest pillarless venue in Asia. It is advertised as the dreamland for cherished memories with an impeccable combination of lighting, food, dining, and overall décor. The Venue want to take your events one-notch above and give an experience of a lifetime with their three distinctly designed halls - Experience, Club XS and Convention Hall. Each of these halls have a distinct ambience, yet all of them are adaptive to diverse events.

The Experience Hall is spread over an astonishing 75,000 sq. ft. with a massive height of 35 ft. It has a dedicated Vedi area with two elite bridal rooms. The porch defines an extravagant entrance. Miscellaneously, there's an obstructed panoramic view of lush greens facing the vast golf course, adding a natural touch to the already impeccable living monument of euphoric celebrations.

Tomas De Bruyne was invited to design the permanent floral art installations for this venue and to add a touch of extravagance to the Experience Hall of A Dot. The purpose of the project was uplifting the event venue to a new level through a permanent floral design concept. This way the venue offers its clients a unique design that is already setup and additionally local wedding planners and decorators can add fresh flower designs to tables and other smaller elements.

All of the elements included in this venue are interconnected by the colour story. The colour palette is celebrating the Indian culture and speaks of the unique way this country celebrates weddings. The magic of the design lies in the interplay of colours within each element individually and in the also the colour connections created between all elements.

We're focusing this blog on one particular element, The Carpet Wall, which was displayed inside the main venue, framing the main entrance of the hall. The inspiration for this piece comes from India's textile traditions, a craft which upholds deep historical significance and reflect local pride and cultural heritage. Each region of India boasts unique techniques and designs, from the intricate embroideries of Lucknow to the resplendent prints of Rajasthan. These textiles are not just fabrics; they embody the stories and aspirations of the Indian people, passed down through generations. Today, Indian textiles continue to captivate the world, showcasing the country's rich cultural tapestry and the artisans' unwavering dedication. The Carpet Wall honours this legacy and appreciate the timeless beauty woven into every thread by the beautiful people of India. The textile feel of the element blends beautifully into the cut out shapes, transposing the feeling of the piece into a sense of priceless value, symbolically representing the Indian craft of textiles.

The Carpet Wall is framing the exit of the ballroom on let and right side. The opening between them allows another design, The Lobby Chandelier, to be seen from inside the ballroom during the event and the size of the element, as it can be seen from the pictures, is quite large. This element is designed with the intention of symmetry, a design made entirely of artificial carnations to bring in the colour story and evoke the craftsmanship of Indian textiles.

The two most important elements of this design are the colours and execution to achieve the desired texture. Flowers are simply a mean to reaching that purpose, as Tomas always teaches in EMC as well. The project was carefully planned and prepared with the local production team in advance, the MDF shapes and structure holding the element on the wall was build beforehand and placed following guidelines once we arrived on location. As far as the element in itself, the entire project, all 7 installations, are designed to last for 2 years as a permanent design of the ballroom. For this reason, only artificial flowers were involved in this project.

Working towards the concept is a guideline we follow when we are on location for big events and large scale installations. The first by ensuring the project is understood by the team who helps implement it, which most of the times includes international designers and EMC graduates. A thorough book including technical drawings, details of measurements, colour palette and materials involved is always printed for the on site work. Digital communication with the local production teams who are handling the welded structured and the instalment on site is taking place for months before the TDB team actually travels to the venue.

Choose the right colours in all materials involved.

Work backwards from the outcome and figure out the most SUITABLE techniques, search potential in materials, resources and act creatively!
